this is a reply to jasmine that got out of control
I’ll be blunt: I started watching the World Cup because A. everybody on tumblr was flipping out and changing their icons to include flags and B. my soccer friend told me, because nobody else was into the sport, that “the players are hot and the sport is actually fun! give soccer a chance for once, sarah”
I’m kind of disappointed that the original reason I got into this sport was the reason that most fans of it detest: hot people. Unfortunately, it completely voids the legitimacy of my reason for staying with it: I actually enjoy the sport. I never gave it a chance before the World Cup because I was constantly told that it was boring and not really all that relevant. My dad still mocks the sport, but usually it’s just making fun of my sudden obsession with it.
I did feel like nobody thought I actually cared about it. All of the soccer players at school still (sometimes) accuse me of just being in it for the attractive men, even though I try to have actual discussions with them about upcoming fixures and transfer rumours. Luckily, because I did stick around for club season and didn’t just pick a club for a single player (I got high fived for liking Aston Villa by a friend who likes Chelsea, just because “it wasn’t one of the hot guy clubs.”), people are finally starting to take me seriously.
ON TO THE ACTUAL “PATRIOTISM” PART
I didn’t really advertise it on tumblr, mostly because the majority of this place was SPAIN SPAIN SPAIN with a side of GERMANY, but my brother recorded the England-USA match and I decided to watch it for no apparent reason. I honestly loved the USMNT, but seeing as they got very little to no support on tumblr, I basically saved all of my fangirling for them and only talked to said soccer fan about them.
To be honest? My heritage is mostly Lebanese and Dutch (but 75% AMURRICAN if you don’t count the Dutch bit). Seeing as the Lebanon football team is ranked 148th and hasn’t qualified for a World Cup, it’s kind of hard to root for them. But as for the Dutch team? I just didn’t connect with them. Sure, I liked a few of the players here and there, but their overall World Cup campaign didn’t leave the greatest impression on me.
I honestly stared liking Spain because of Iker Casillas. I watched the Spain – Honduras game and just fell in love with him. Gradually, I started liking more of the players and ended up supporting them towards the end. The fact that most of them are pretty attractive is a bonus, but it’s not why I solely like them. I support Germany even though I didn’t during the World Cup, because most of the tumblr fans made it out to be YOU EITHER SUPPORT GERMANY OR SPAIN and I just went with my gut. However, after rewatching their World Cup matches and seeing some of the friendlies, I genuinely started liking the team.
The teams I like the most are:
-
USA
-
Spain
-
Germany
But there’s no team that I genuinely hate. Players, possibly, but no team.
There is no point to this post.
